Abstract
A form of 9,10-dihydroxystearic acid which has a melting-point within the range of about 260-265 DEG F., instead of the normal 190-200 DEG F., is produced by oxidizing oleic acid with potassium permanganate at about 30-35 DEG F., or by oxidizing elaidic acid with performic acid at about 114 DEG F. In an example, an aqueous solution of sodium oleate containing potassium hydroxide is mixed with an aqueous solution of potassium permanganate and mixing is continued at 35 DEG F. for 30 minutes. Sodium sulphite and concentrated hydrochloric acid is then added, whereupon the high-melting form of 9,10-dihydroxystearic acid separates as a solid from the aqueous layer. It is filtered, washed and recrystallized from ethyl alcohol.ALSO:A lubricating grease having good water resistance and a high dropping point comprises a lubricating oil thickened with a metal soap of the form of 9, 10-dihydroxystearic acid which melts at about 260-265 DEG F. This form may be produced by oxidizing elaidic acid with performic acid at about 114 DEG F., or by oxidizing oleic acid with potassium permanganate at about 30-35 DEG F. in a mildly alkaline aqueous medium containing a low concentration of reactants. The lubricating oil may be mineral oil, a hydrocarbon polymer, a di-ester (e.g. di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate) or a complex ester (e.g. one prepared from a dibasic acid, a glycol and a monobasic acid. Instead of metal soaps of the 9, 10-dihydroxy-stearic acid above, soap-salt complexes of these soaps with metal salts of 11-C5 carboxylic acids may be employed. Examples of these carboxylic acids are formic, acetic, propionic, butyric, valeric, furoic and acrylic acids. Metal bases suitable for the formation of the soaps and soap-salt complexes include the hydroxides of aluminium, alkali metals such as lithium, sodium and potassium, and alkaline earth metals such as calcium and barium. The soaps and soap-salt complexes may be preformed or prepared in situ in the lubricating oil. Additional ingredients such as anti-oxidants (e.g. amines) and extreme pressure agents (e.g. containing sulphur, halogen and/or phosphorous) may be incorporated in the lubricating grease. In the examples, the preparation of lubricating greases containing mineral lubricating oil and the calcium, calcium-lithium or lithium soaps of the 9, 10-dihydroxystearic acid is described. For comparison purposes, the preparation of similar greases, employing ordinary 9, 10-dihydroxy-stearic acid or 12-hydroxy-stearic acid is described.
