Abstract

767,208. Vehicle power steering. BURMAN & SONS, Ltd., and BRIGGS, W. H. Jan. 3, 1955 [Jan. 8, 1954], No. 571/54. Class 79(5). In a vehicle steering mechanism comprising a manually rotatable spindle b having a limited axial freedom, a screw c on the spindle operating a slidable nut d to oscillate an arm e carried by a shaft h by which motion is transmitted to the steerable wheels (not shown), there is provided a fluid actuated motor which comprises an oscillatory vane j secured to the shaft h and contained in a housing i and a piston valve member r formed on the spindle for controlling the fluid supply to the motor. As shown balls f engage the screw c and travel along a return channel g. The casing i has partition pieces k, the vanes j and pieces k dividing the space within the motor into four compartments connected by ports m to passages n, o. The motor is connectable with an engine-driven pump (not shown) through a valve comprising the member r on the spindle b ports s connected with the passages n, o, a port u connected to the pump outlet and ports t connected by outlets q to the pump inlet. Angular movement of the spindle b causes through reaction between the screw c and nut d axial movement of the spindle b and member r to actuate the motor. By adjustment of the pressure admitted to the motor the latter may supplement the action of the driver or exert the whole of the steering effort. In a modification Fig. 4 (not shown), a single vane motor is used. The hydraulic action may be replaced by a pneumatic one.
