766,400. Foundry ladles. LEYBOLDHOCHVAKUUM-ANLAGEN GES. Dec. 1, 1954 [Dec. 5, 1953], No. 34788/54. Class 82(1) A liquid metal container to receive highmelting point liquid metal comprises an outer metal shell, an interior refractory lining for the metal shell, a body 13 of ceramic material inserted into the bottom of the interior lining 12 which body has an opening therein, and a shield 32 of sheet metal surrounding the ceramic body, the shield having two rims, one being connected by welding to the inner face of the metal shell 11 while the other rim projects into the interior of the container so as to extend into the liquid metal when the container is in use. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the shield is in the form of an annular ring attached by welding to the side wall of the container. As shown in Fig. 5 the ring may be attached directly to the container wall as is ring 39, or, in the case of ring 41, it may be welded to a thicker metal ring 42 which is itself welded to the container wall. A container according to the invention may be used for subjecting molten metal to gas treatment, the container being mounted over a vessel which is provided with means for the supply of gas, said vessel having a lid provided with a hole which lies opposite the opening in the ceramic body in the bottom of the container, and the bottom of the container being connected by an air-tight joint to the lid of the vessel.
