Abstract

766,349. Combined sound and picture apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 19, 1955 [Jan. 20, 1954], No. 1734/54. Class 40 (2). Means for indicating correct relative speeds of a magnetic sound record apparatus and a cine projector to facilitate manual adjustment of the relative speeds of said apparatus comprises the utilization of interrupted light from the projector to produce a signal indicative of variation in relative speed. For this purpose, pictures from the cine projector are viewed through a mirror or prism 7, a negative lens 6 and an obturating shutter 9 rotated by a motor 4 driving a magnetic sound tape 2. In the event of error in relative speed of the two pieces of apparatus, a shadow line will travel across the viewed picture in a direction depending upon whether the motor 4 is relatively too fast or too slow. It can be seen from Fig. 3, that should the leading edge of the shutter 9 be in the position shown at the moment when an individual picture frame becomes illuminated, and remains illuminated until the trailing edge has almost reached the same position, a dark line will appear down the centre of the picture, and will remain in that position while the motor 4 rotates at the correct speed. Variation from this position indicates incorrect speed which can be adjusted by suitable manually operable means.
