Abstract

766,159. Liquid column gas pumps. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS), Ltd. May 16, 1955 [Feb. 16, 1954], No. 4549/54. Class 8(1) A low pressure pump for the pumping of gas by the displacement of a liquid, has a cylinder within which slides a slotted piston moved operatively in one direction by a cam rotating within the piston slot and inoperatively in the other direction by the pressure of liquid displaced during the operative stroke. The left-hand end of the piston 1 has a leather cup seal and is slidable in a cylinder 2, the left-hand portion of which is filled with mercury and connected by a mercury column in a pipe 7 to a gas analysis apparatus. The righthand portion of the piston 1 is slotted to receive a circular cam 3 eccentrically mounted on a spindle 4 driven through a reduction gear by an electric motor 5, the speed of which can be controlled by a knob 9. The stroke of the piston is limited by a screw-threaded abutment 6, the position of which is adjusted by rotation of a hand knob 6'. An indicator 10 shows the position of the cam or piston at any time.
