Abstract
A solvent rich in p-cymene is obtained by distilling the steam distillate obtained from the manufacture of sulphurized terpene to obtain a distilled product having a boiling point of approximately 180 DEG C. The sulphurized terpene may be obtained by sulphurizing a commercial dipentene according to the method described in Specifications 688,293, 703,631, 750,094, 761,579 and 761,997. The direct steam distillates contain in addition to the p-cymene up to 10 per cent of sulphur and this is reduced by re-running in a distillation column which may be a conventional vacuum or atmospheric pipe-still. The remaining sulphur compounds may be removed by the Doctor process, the copper-chloride sweetening process, or by a caustic soda wash. The product may be stabilized by the addition of 0.01 to 0.05 per cent of an antioxidant such as N,N1-di-secondary butyl paraphenylene diamine, 2.4-di-methyl-6-tertiary butyl phenol or 2 : 6-di-tertiary butyl-4-methyl phenol.
