Abstract
765,685. Phase discriminators. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Jan. 14, 1955 [Jan. 22, 1954], No. 2028/54. Class 40(5) In a phase discriminator for a carrier phase modulated between Œ 180 degrees the signals carrier and a stable reference carrier of reversed phase relative to the middle phase of the signal are both converted at 3, 4 to short pulses of corresponding phase and frequency, e.g. by squaring, differentiating and taking off only positive going pulses, which are then used to trigger the opposite conditions of stability a bi-stable valve circuit 5, so that the output of one valve is a train of constant amplitude pulses, of duration proportional to the phase difference, which is then integrated to produce a correspondingly proportional D.C. output current. Further, a small portion of the reference wave of reversed phase is added by an attenuator 8. to the phase modulated wave before conversion to ensure that the output assumes the valve corresponding to zero modulation in the event of non- receipt of the signal wave.
