Class 82(1) [Also in Groups III and XII] Vaporization apparatus for purifying molten metals or other heavy or corrosive liquids, and especially for purifying zinc, comprises a columnar chamber. built up from refractory elements with shallow basins at their upper faces and integral transverse blocks at their ends stacked together to form two opposite chamber walls, the elements being parallel and arranged in tiers with the elements of adjacent tiers overlapping so that liquid fed to the basins will overflow from tier to tier, liquid from a basin in one tier falling into two basins of the next lower tier so as to effect a number of zig-zag passages in the chamber. As shown in section in Fig. 2 and in partial section to an enlarged scale in Fig. 4, a column 10 provided with a head 12 supplied with molten zinc at 20 and a sump 14 from which purified zinc is runoff has side walls 32 and 33 with yieldable means in the form of springs 75 allowing for expansion, and end walls built up from the rectangular ends of elements 35, 36, 37 and 38 extending along the column, the elements 35 and 36 having passages 35a and 36a for heating gases passed therethrough across the column. Cadmium vapour and other impurities more volatile than zinc flow upwards and leave the apparatus at 22a.
