Abstract

Pentachlorophenol acetate is prepared by reacting pentachlorophenol with acetic anhydride using anhydrous sodium acetate as catalyst.ALSO:A lubricating oil composition comprises a mineral lubricating oil and a minor proportion of an oil-soluble ester of a halogenated phenol with a C1-C6 aliphatic acid or a C12-C22 fatty acid. Halogenated phenols referred to are ortho, meta and para chlorophenol, di, tri and tetrachlorophenols, pentachlorophenol, chlorocresols, chloroanol, chlorothymol, chlorocatechols, chlororesorcinols, chlorohydroquinones, chloropyrogallol, chloronaphthols and chlorophenanthrenols. From 0.01 to 20 per cent of the ester may be used. A turbine oil composition is described containing 1 per cent pentachlorophenol acetate, 0.4 per cent 2, 6 dibutyl paracresol, 0.1 per cent "Santoluble" (Registered Trade Mark) and 0.1 per cent Turkey red oil. The Provisional Specification refers to chlorinated esters in general and refers also to esters of trichoroethanol and trichloroacetic acid.
