Abstract

[Also in Group XV] A clamping device comprises an open-ended member forming part of one (4) of two members 4, 13 adapted to be clamped together, the openended member being in the form of a channel adapted to embrace the other (13) of the two members, a stirrup member adapted to engage an abutment in the channel, and screw means 10 co-operating with the stirrup member to cause clamping pressure to be applied to the member embraced by the channel. As shown, the channel-shaped member has parallel sides 1, 2 and a V-shaped base 3, and it is secured by welding to the member 4 which forms part of a structure, e.g. a physical training structure for children. Each of the sides has a rectangular aperture 5, 6, one wall of each of which forms the abutment and the stirrup member is U- shaped and has legs 7 and 8. The stirrup member is passed through the aperture 6 so that it is anchored to the side 2. The legs 7 and 8 are spaced by a distance piece 9 which has a tapped hole for the screw means 10 which engages a member 13. The leg 7 has a bentover end 11 for engagement with the outer surface of the side 1 after passing through the aperture 5, the bent-over end 11 preventing the sides of the channel opening under load. The distance piece 9 is spaced from the closed end of the stirrup member sufficiently far to allow the end 11 to be withdrawn from the aperture 5. In a modification, the base of the channel may be provided with a hinge so that any load is transferred directly to the bent end of the stirrup member. Instead of having two apertures in the channel, one side may be turned outwardly to form a hook and the stirrup member is formed with an aperture which engages the hook. The other end of the stirrup member has a projection adapted to pass through an aperture in the other side of the projection being hooked at its end if desired. The side 1 may be extended to form a foot 12 when the member 4 forms the lowermost member of the built-up structure. The Provisional Specification describes a modification in which the channel-shaped member has a plurality of serrations in one side, one of which is selectively engaged by the stirrup member which does not engage the other side. The stirrup member has a lug extending away from the base of the channel which is tapped to secure the screw means which exerts pressure on the inside of the serrated side to force the stirrup against the member 13 to clamp it in the channel.
