Abstract

765,243. Band clips. OAK PARK TRUST & SAVINGS BANK. Jan. 28, 1955 [Jan. 29, 1954], No. 2605/55. Class 44. A hose clamp comprises a hose-surrounding band 21 with a housing at one end rotatably supporting a substantially tangential screw 27 with a screw thread adapted to engage with a series of slots 24 in the other end of the band, the screw being axially and laterally movable in the housing, when the band is not tight and the screw having one or more tapered portions each to co-operate with a surrounding slot in an end wall of the housing to urge the screw laterally to engage the screw-threads with the band slots when the screw is rotated to tighten the band, in which the screw also has, adjoining the smaller end of the or each tapered portion, a neck portion of a diameter less than the core diameter of the screw-threaded portion and of appreciable axial length and the extent to which the screw is axially movable in the housing is sufficient to allow the tapered portion to leave and the neck portion to enter the housing wall slot so that freedom of movement of the neck portion in the housing wall slot facilitates lateral movement of the screw to disengage the screw-thread from the band slots. As shown in Fig. 2, the screw has a tapering portion 49, 56 and a neck portion 52, 53 at each end and the neck portion 53 is joined by a tapering portion 51 to the screw-threaded portion. The tapering portion 56 is joined to a head 55 having a screw-driver slot 58 and the neck portion 52 terminates in an enlargement 54. Each end of the housing has a wall slot 42, 43 and these slots are of such a depth that when the neck portions 52, 53 are in them the thread of the screw is out of engagement with the slots 24 in the band. When the screw 27 is moved longitudinally by the engagement of a screwdriver with the slot 58, the tapered portions 49, 56 engage the slots 42, 43 and move the threaded portion of the screw downwardly into engagement with the slot 24. The greater the tension in the band the further the threads are moved into the slots 24. In a modification when it is desired to limit the amount of engagement of the thread with the slots 24, a cylindrical portion can be provided adjacent one or both of the tapered portions 49 and 56 so that at a suitable tension in the band one or both of the slots 42, 43 engages a cylindrical portion. In another construction, Fig. 11, a screw 96 is mounted by a reduced diameter end 98 in a plate 101 which is pivotally mounted in a housing. This enables the thread to be moved out of engagement with the band by pivoting the screw. The head end of the screw is provided with a neck portion 107 which is flanked on each side by tapering portions 106 and 108 and a keyhole slot is provided in the adjacent end wall of the housing. The entrance 113 of the keyhole slot is only wide enough to take the neck portion 107 of the screw and the engagement of the tapered portion 108 with the enlarged portion 114 of the keyhole slot forces the threads of the screw into engagement with the slots 24 in the band. A cylindrical portion 109 is provided adjacent the tapering portion 108 to limit the penetration of the screw-threads into the slots 24 when a suitable tension has been reached in the band. In all of the constructions to aid the threading of the slotted end of the band through the housing the screwthread has one end wall perpendicular to the axis of the screw and the opposite wall inclined and the slots 24 are either of generally triangular or of trapezoidal shape so that the inclined wall of the screw-thread only makes contact at two spaced points. In each construction the housing has a base 28, Fig. 13, which underlies the end of the band which is cranked upwardly to receive it and slots 119 are formed in the band through which upwardly struck tangs 121 in the base of the housing are passed and clinched over to attach the housing to the band.
