The item indicator 5 of a cash register is mounted in a carrier 1 which is positively moved, early in each cyclic operation, to disengage the indicator from its differential adjusting means, the indicator then being positively reset to zero by the operating mechanism. The indicator drums 5 are geared to wheels 7 loose on a resetting shaft 8 also mounted in the carrier 1. The shaft 8 is in permanent driving connection with a toothed actuating lever 32, by way of pinions 29, 36 and alternative back gears 38, 39 engaged by the pinion 29 in the raised and lowered positions, respectively, of the carrier 1. At the commencement of each cycle, cam slotted arms 13, 14 are rocked to raise the carrier 1 and disengage the wheels 7 from differential setting wheels 61, whereupon the actuating lever 32 is rocked by main operating cams (not shown) to rotate the shaft 8 counterclockwise so that arms 9 on the shaft engage studs 10 on the wheels 7 and positively reset the wheels 7 and drums 5, steps 7b in the wheels then abutting a rod 11 of the carrier. At this time, key-set actuator bars 52 are released to springs 51 and their differential settings transmitted by toothed quadrants 49 to the wheels 61. The arms 13, 14 are next rocked back to lower the indicator carrier and so re-engage the wheels 7 with the now differentially set wheels 61; the lever 32 also is rocked back to return the resetting shaft 8 and free the studs 10 of the arms 9. Finally, the actuator bars 52 are restored by a bail 59 and the differential setting of the wheels 61 is thereby transmitted to the wheels 7 and indicator drums 5.
