764,861. Pulse generating circuits. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 25, 1955 [Dec. 31, 1953], No. 36207/54. Class 40(6) A circuit for generating a square wave voltage from a sinusoidal input comprises an amplifier having a negative feedback path including biasing means whereby appreciable feed-back occurs when the input voltage exceeds a pre-determined proportion of its peak value, the effective bias being equalized during positive and negative half-cycles of the input. The Figure shows a non-linear circuit in which a sinusoidal voltage is applied at input VIN to an amplifier which has a negative feedback path comprising oppositely poled rectifiers D1, D2 and capacitors C1, C2. The capacitors will acquire charges which have a constant . mean value over a number of cycles so that neither rectifier conducts until the applied voltage exceeds that across either capacitor. For a sine-wave input of constant amplitude the output voltage waveform will' have equal areas above and below the axis and the peak voltage of the square wave out- - put will vary with the peak voltage of the sinusoidal input. In a modification the resistor R is replaced by a thermistor and resistor in series by this means an approximately constant output peak voltage is obtained with varying input voltage. The mean gain and thus the peak output can be made constant for a wide range of input voltages and independently of the ambient temperature by also replacing resistor R1 by a thermistor and resistor in series.
