Abstract

<PICT:0764827/III/1> In a distillation process wherein the liquid is brought into direct contact with a finely divided heat carrier material, the heat carrier which, for example, consists of granules of a metal, metal compounds, ceramic substances or graphite of about 1 mm. diameter, is heated in a chamber 7 by the passage therethrough of combustion gases or high temperature waste gases and flows through a lock 3 and a distributer device 4 so that it showers through an evaporating chamber 1. The liquid to be distilled enters a jacket 2 surrounding chamber 1 through a pipe 11 and passes in a preheated condition into the chamber through atomizer nozzles 13. The vapour generated by contact with the heat carrier passes upwardly through chamber 1 and is withdrawn through one or more of pipes 16 which are located at different levels to enable vapour to be withdrawn at different temperatures. The cooled heat carrier discharges through a lock 5, is screened to remove dust and recycled to the heating chamber 7 by means of a conveyer 6. In some cases the heat carrier may be introduced into the chamber in molten droplet form, the droplets solidifying before they reach the bottom of the chamber and come into contact with the sprayed liquid. Baffles may be provided in the evaporation chamber to interrupt the free drop of the heat carrier and thus increase its residence time in the chamber.
