Abstract

764,282. Making brake drums. KELSEYHAYES WHEEL CO. Feb. 2, 1955 [Feb. 15, 1954], No. 3139/55. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] A brake drum is formed of a sheet metal web portion 3 and a sheet metal ring portion 4 which is a telescoped press fit over the peripheral axially extending flange 6 of the sheet-metal web 3 and the brake lining 2 is formed of cast metal fused to both the flange 6 and the ring 4. The flange 6 is provided with a series of circumferentially spaced openings 7 and the web 3 and ring 4 are assembled and placed in the rotatable head of a centrifugal casting-machine and heated to approximately 1500‹ F. and then cast iron at a temperature of approximately 2800‹ F. is poured into the shell 1 formed by the web 3 and ring 4 while the head is being revolved and fuses with the web and ring to form a molecular bond between the brake lining 2, the web 3 and the ring 4 to secure the latter portions together and form a cylindrical brake surface 11. Fig. 4 shows an alternative construction wherein the web has a circumferential bead 13 adjacent the peripheral flange and the brake lining 2 has a portion extending within the bead.
