Abstract

764,269. Driving auxiliary parts. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. Feb. 2, 1955 [Feb. 10, 1954], No. 3055/55. Class 79(2). [Also in Group XIX] A speedometer is driven from teeth 13 on the output shaft 12 of a motor vehicle change speed gear, the teeth meshing with teeth 42 on a driven member 38 having a socket connection with the core 45 of a flexible cable 18, the member 38 being rotatably supported and axially fixed to a supporting member 17 mounted in a bore 16 in the gear housing 11 and the sheath 19 of the cable 18 being secured to the member 17. As shown in Fig. 4 the sheath 19 is connected by a ferrule 22 to the member 17 and the core 45 has a square sectioned end portion received in a corresponding shaped blind socket 44 in the member 38 which is made of nylon. The member 38 has a bore 39 receiving a threaded portion 33 of the member 17, the threads serving to prevent the entry of oil into the bore 37 from the housing 11. Axial movement between the members 17, 38 is limited by a C-shaped wire spring retainer 48 having its legs passing through chordal slots 46 in the member 38 and entering an annular groove 34 in the member 17. An oil seal 49 is provided between the bore 16 and the member 17, and the member 17 is located in the bore 16 by a flange 26 and a clamping strip 27. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the members 17, 38 are formed with grooves receiving flanges of a spring clip having a splined connection with the change speed housing.
