Abstract

764,238. Pipe joints. RUUD MANUFACTURING CO. Jan. 25, 1955 [Sept. 13, 1954], No. 2186/55. Class 99(1) [Also in Group XVIII] An electrically insulated pipe connector, particularly for connecting a pipe 63, Fig. 1, to a water tank 20, comprises a tubular metal connector 102 in which a sleeve 124 o f dielectric material is tightly fixed against axial and rotary displacement relative thereto, the sleeve being formed of a moulded plastic having substantially the same thermal coefficient of expansion as the connector 102. The connector 102 is of aluminium or alluminium alloy and is screw-threaded at 114 for connection to a connecting flange 30 welded at 32 to the wall of an aluminium or aluminium alloy hot water tank 20 provided with an inner surrounding metal jacket 22, forming a passage around the tank for hot combusti¾n products from a burner, and an outer jacket 24. The connector 102 has a flange 106 clamped to the casing 24 by screws 52, spring seals 46 being provided to seal the aperture 42 on the casing 22. The sleeve 124 is preferably of plastic reinforced with fibreglass and is moulded in position in the member 102, the sleeve having hexagonal portions 130 to prevent rotation and an annular rib 132 to prevent axial movement thereof. The sleeve 124 is screw-threaded for engagement with screw-threads on the pipe 63. The member 102 is preferably cast and the surfaces surrounding the sleeve 124 are left rough and impregnated with plastic to improve the bond between the sleeve 124 and member 100. In Fig. 3 the dielectric sleeve 228 has an inner metal supporting sleeve 240, preferably of brass, bonded thereto into which the pipe 63 is screwed. The sleeve 224 has hexagonal portions 242, 244, 246 and annular ribs 224, 226. In a modification the ribs 224, 226, are omitted and the outside of the sleeve 228 is fluted.
