764,230. Welding by fusion; making heat exchangers. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Jan. 24, 1955 [Jan. 25, 1954], No. 2069/55. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In welding a tube to a pressure vessel member a welding groove with an obtuse angle at its apex is formed between a surface of the member and an end part of the tube and weld metal is deposited in the groove to join the tube and member. In an embodiment tubes 2 are.fitted in seats in a member 1 to extend beyond the surface 3 of the member in which surface adjacent each seat a rim or fillet 5, Fig. 2, of metal is formed by machining. Each tube is expanded in the seat and the projecting tube ends are formed into frustums of cones. Weld deposits are laid in the grooves formed between the tube ends and the surface 3, each weld deposit 8, Fig. 4, being laid in a single pass around a number of tube ends as in Fig. 4 or by encircling a tube end completely and then going on to an adjacent tube. Cooling fluid, e.g. air, is passed through the tubes during welding. The tube ends are finally reamed or drilled to the tube internal diameter as in Fig. 5. In a modification a tube 17, Fig. 7 initially with an L- shaped annular groove in its end, is expanded into a seat in a member 15 also having an L-shaped groove so that the groove bottoms coincide. The tube end is formed into a frustum of a cone and the composite groove is filled with weld deposits 23, 24, 25. The tube end is finally reamed or drilled to the tube internal diameter. In each embodiment the leakage path from the exposed weld face to the tube seat is greater than one-and-a-half times the tube wall thickness.
