[Also in Group XIII] Washing and spin drying apparatus comprises a perforated clothes basket 19 disposed within a liquid-receiving tub 16, means carried by the tub for rotating the basket about a generally horizontal axis at low and high speeds, and liquid supplying and discharging means for the tub, the tub, basket and rotating means forming a unitary structure 10 which is suspended beneath a fixed support in such a way as to provide for vibratory movement in a generally horizontal direction while restricting vibrations in a generally vertical direction. The support for the unitary structure 10 comprises a pair of axially aligned pins 42 carried by a hanger plate 43 fixed to the machine housing 11, and a pair of webs (as 44) secured to the tube 16 and pivotally suspended by the pins 42. The vibrations are damped by a U-shaped spring 47 carrying shoes 48 which frictionally engage a plate 49 secured to the tub 16. The basket 19 is driven through a solenoid-controlled two-speed transmission (not shown) by an electric motor 25 mounted on the tube 16. Liquid may be supplied to the tub through a conduit 34 and opening 33, and discharged by means of a pump operated by a second motor (not shown). The basket 19 is of the end-loading type, and the tub 19 is provided with an inclined shoot (Fig. 1, not shown) connected by a resilient tubular member to an opening in an inclined front portion of the housing 11 closed by a hinged door. Final drying by hot air may be provided.
