Abstract

Antistatic moulding compositions, particularly for sound records, comprise a plastic material and a quaternary ammonium compound of the formula <FORM:0764024/IV(a)/1> where R represents an aliphatic or alicyclic radical containing at least 7 carbon atoms, e.g. heptyl, octyl, octenyl, nonyl, nonenyl, decyl, decenyl, undecyl, undecenyl, tridecyl, tetradecyl, tetradecenyl, heptadecyl, heptadecenyl, octadecyl, octadecenyl or the residue of abietic acid, R1 and R11 are alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radicals containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms, e.g. methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, sec.-butyl, tert.-butyl, n-amyl, isoamyl, sec.-amyl, tert.-amyl, hydroxyethyl, hydroxypropyl, hydroxyisopropyl, dihydroxy-propyl, hydroxybutyl, dihydroxybutyl, hydroxyamyl or dihydroxyamyl, R111 is an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkenyl, or aralkyl radical, e.g. as R1 and R11, hexyl to octadecyl and the mono-, di-, tri-and higher hydroxy derivatives thereof, allyl, methallyl, ethallyl, 2-butenyl, 3-butenyl, 3-methyl-2-butenyl, 3-pentenyl, 4-pentenyl, 2,3-pentadienyl, 3 - methyl - 3 - butenyl, benzyl, phenylethyl, phenylpropyl, phenylisopropyl or phenylbutyl, and Y is an anion, e.g. chloride, bromide, fluoride, iodide, sulphate, sulphonate, phosphate, hydroxide, borate, cyanide, carbonate, hydrocarbonate, thiocyanate, isocyanate, sulphite, bisulphite, nitrate, nitrite, oxalate, silicate, sulphide, cyanate or acetate. The quaternary ammonium compound, e.g. stearamido - propyl dimethyl b - hydroxyethyl ammonium phosphate or chloride, myristamidopropyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride or stearamido-propyl trimethyl ammonium phosphate, may be predeposited on the particles of one of the ingredients, e.g. by flooding the particles with a solution or dispersion of the agent, mixing to a uniform slurry and drying.
