Abstract

Aqueous polymeric dispersions which can be thickened by the addition of basically-acting substances are prepared by the aqueous emulsion polymerization of a mixture consisting to a preponderating extent of one or more methacrylic acid ether-esters of the general formula <FORM:0764021/IV(a)/1> in which x is 1 or a multiple thereof and R is an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkoxy radical which may be attached to a neighbouring methylene group with ring formation, e.g. 2-methoxyethyl, 2 - ethoxyethyl, (2 - methoxy) - 2 - ethoxyethyl tetrahydrofurfuryl and diethylene glycol monomethyl ether methacrylates, and at least one acid group containing comonomer, e.g. acrylic, methacrylic and vinyl sulphonic acids, and optionally one or more other copolymerizable compounds, e.g. acrylonitrile, butyl acrylate, butyl methacrylate and a fatty alcohol ester of methacrylic acid. In an example a mixture of monomers and ammonium persulphate is added gradually to a heated aqueous medium containing a condensation product of a fat acid and sodium hydroxyethyl sulphonate as an emulsifying agent, polymerization being complete after two hours. Suitable basic substances for thickening the dispersions are ammonia, diethanolamine and triethanolamine. The aqueous dispersions may be used for coating paper or leather, or as a stove-lacquer containing titanium dioxide as a pigment.
