Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula Ar-CnH2n-X-CCl = CHCl, where Ar is an aryl radical, which may be substituted by halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, carboxy, nitro or other groups, n = 0-3, and X is SO or SO2, and insecticidal or fungicidal compositions containing the compounds. The products are obtainable by oxidation of the corresponding sulphides. In examples, 1 : 2 - dichloro - 1 - phenylthioethylene and the corresponding p-chlorophenyl- and p-bromophenyl derivatives, the corresponding p-methyl-, p-isopropyl-, p-methoxy-, and p-ethoxy-phenylthioethylenes are each oxidized in two stages, with hydrogen peroxide in acetic acid solution to give the 1 : 2-dichloro-1-phenyl- or substituted phenylsulphinyl- or sulphonyl-ethylenes; the phenyl groups may also be substituted by two chlorines, and by one carboxy group; 1 : 2-dichloro-1-(b -naphthyl sulphinyl)-ethylene, and 1 : 2-dichloro-1 - benzyl - and - 1 - p - chlorobenzyl - sulphonyl-ethylenes and the corresponding sulphinyl products, are also described. Starting materials. 1 : 2 - Dichloro - 1 - (41 - alkoxyphenylthio) ethylenes are obtained by condensation of trichloroethylene and p-alkoxythiophenols. Methyl, carboxy and chloro- and bromo-substituted phenyl and benzyl-thioethylene derivatives of similar type are obtained by the reaction between the corresponding thiophenols or benzyl mercaptans with trichloroethylene, and a corresponding b -naphthyl derivative from b -thionaphthol.
