Abstract

Polystyrene of high impact strength is obtained by mixing polystyrene beads or particles with a synthetic rubber, e.g. butadiene-styrene copolymer latex and polystyrene latex in quantities such that the beads constitute at least 50 per cent by weight of the mixture on a solids basis, and then drying. The polystyrene latex may be prepared by heating in two stages an emulsion containing oleic acid, sodium dodecyl toluene sulphonate, potassium persulphate and sufficient caustic soda to bring the pH to 11. In a modification the styrene is polymerized, using t-butyl hydroperoxide and diethylene triamine, in admixture with a synthetic rubber latex to give a graft polymer which is then mixed with polystyrene and dried, extruded and chopped.
