Abstract
763,327. Exhaust-silencers ; intake silencers. LEISTRITZ, H. K. Dec. 16, 1954 [Dec. 18, 1953; Dec. 28, 1953; Jan. 3, 1954; Jan. 20, 1954], No. 36475/54. Class 7 (2). In a silencer embodying at least one sounddamping unit arranged to divide a gas stream into a number of component gas streams which are separated and issue from the exit of the silencer at spaced intervals of time, the gas flow ducts 2-7 are of unequal length and extend between common inlet and exit orifices 1, 9, and the cross-sectional areas of the longer ducts are greater than those of the shorter ducts; also the cross-sectional area of the exit orifice is smaller than that of the inlet orifice. As shown in Fig. 1, the cross-sectional area of the outlet orifice is constricted by a projecting tongue 7a. The cross-sectional area of the ducts may increase from the inlet to the outlet ends thereof, and be proportional to the lengths of the ducts. In Fig. 2, two units are disposed in series, the gas entering at 10 and being subdivided by ducts 11-14 communicating with a duct 15 which in turn forms the inlet to a second system of ducts 16-19 of different cross-sections and lengths and also having different curvatures; the latter ducts connect with an outlet 20, In a further embodiment, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), two sound-damping units are disposed side-by-side, the ducts of each unit being interconnected. The silencer may be directly connected, or by a pipe 35, to the exhaust port of an engine, and in turn be connected to a baffle-free chamber 37, Fig. 6, having an inlet nozzle and an outlet nozzle 38, both nozzles having a cross-sectional area equal to that of the outlet of the silencer. The combination of a silencer and a baffle-free chamber may be located on the intake side of the engine.
