762,741. Cores. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 24, 1954 [Dec. 17 1953], No. 34070/54. Class 83 (1). A core-assembly for use in casting an I.C. engine cylinder-head, comprises a water-jacket core having a number of openings in one side and a number of openings in another side, an exhaust-port core having a number of generally laterally-extending exhaust-port-defining armportions extending within said openings, and an intake-port-cone having a number of generally laterallyextending intake-port-defining arms fitting in the recesses in the waterjacket core. As applied to a core assembly for a V-8 engine, a waterjacket-core loose piece 96 is first located in the drag mould-half. The intakeport-core 94 is then placed in the drag with the central exhaust-port-defining portions 98, 100 positioned around the projection 101 and into the recesses 102 of the piece 96. The main water-jacket core 92 is then placed over arm portions 132, 134, 98, 100, 136, 138 of the core 94, with side projections 104 contacting end surfaces 108 and resting in core-prints in the mould. Projections III also engage core-prints in the mould. Finally the exhaust-port-core 90 is fitted into the main water-jacket-core 92, with the end exhaust-port-defining arm-portions 112, 114 and inner exhaust-port-defining armportions 116, 118, extending into the openings 120, 122, 124, 126 respectively in the waterjacket-core. The combustion-chambers, sparking-plug-pockets, rocker-arm-pockets, and remainder of the outside contour are formed by the sand of the mould.
