Abstract
762,729. Spring suspensions; laminated springs. NAYLOR, J. T., and ATKINSON VEHICLES, Ltd., [formerly ATKINSON LORRIES (1933), Ltd. Aug. 22, 1955 [Oct. 30, 1954], No. 31419/54. Classes 108(2) and 108(3). Relates to road vehicle undercarriages of the type in which twin axles are mounted upon leaf springs disposed longitudinally of the vehicle, the springs at each side having their adjacent ends connected by a balance beam to ensure even load distribution between the wheels. According to the invention, and wherein each balance beam is connected to each of the adjacent springs ends by means of a shackle, at least one of the pins associated'with the shackle is provided, between its anchorages to the latter, with a part-spherical enlargement engaging a complementary, split seating in the balance beam or spring end, as the case may be. As shown, a shackle pin 13 connecting a shackle 6 to a balance beam eye 15, is formed with an enlargement 14 which is engaged by bearing members 16 connected together by bolts 18 traversing the thickness of the balance beam. Rubber or like sealing washers 24 are interposed between the links of the shackle and the bearing members 16 to retain lubricant applied through a duct 23. Engagement of the bearing members 16 with the enlargement 14 is adjustable by means of shims 27. The bearing seat 19, constituted by the members 16 may, alternatively, be divided in a plane parallel to the axis of the pin 13. A pin 28 associated with the spring eye 5 may also be provided with an enlargement and engaged with a complementary seating in the eye of the spring. The bearing members may be formed of phosphor-bronze or the like or a non-metallic substance.
