Abstract
A lubricant comprises a compound of the formula (RX)3-Si-Y wherein R is an alkyl group of 6 to 20 carbon atoms, X is oxygen or sulphur, and Y is (RX)-or -X-R1-X-Si-(RX)3, R1 being a glycol or thioglycol residue, provided that when X is oxygen, Y is -X-R1-X-Si-(RX)3 and/or R is the residue of an oxo alcohol. The compounds are prepared by reacting silicon tetrachloride with the alcohol or mercaptan, with or without a glycol. Examples describe the preparation of C10 and C13 oxo alcohol esters; esters of t-octyl, t-hexadecyl and t-dodecyl mercaptans; and the complex ester of tetramethylene glycol and C8 oxo alcohol, of butane-diol-1,3 and C8 oxo alcohol and of tetramethylene glycol and C13 oxo alcohol. Other glycols are specified. As well as their use as lubricants the silicates may be used, with or without additives, as plasticizers and blending agents for mineral oils. Specification 703,451, [Group III], is referred to.ALSO:A lubricant comprising a silica ester of the formula (RX)3-Si-Y wherein R is an alkyl group of 6 to 20 carbon atoms, X is oxygen or sulphur, and Y is (RX)- or -X-R1-X-Si-(RX)3, R1 being a glycol or thioglycol residue, provided that when X is oxygen, Y is -X-R1-X-Si-(RX)3 and/or R is the residue of an oxo alcohol, may be blended with mineral lubricating oils or thickened to a grease by the addition of a metallic soap of a high molecular weight fatty acid. The examples describe (1) a mixture of a tetra C8 oxo alkyl silicate with 15 per cent of a lithium soap of crotonic and hydrogenated fish oil acids, and 1 per cent of phenyl alpha naphthylamine; (2) a mixture of a tetra C13 oxo alkyl silicate and 12 per cent of a lithium soap of acetic and hydrogenated fish oils acids and the phenyl naphthylamine.
