A sodium vapour lamp has a filling of Ne, Kr and/or Xe, with or without A. Total quantity of Xe, Kr and A is 0À05-1 per cent, preferably 0À2 per cent, by volume, of the amount of Ne. Total quantity of Xe and/or Kr is preferably 0À02 per cent and the amount of A 0À18 per cent, by volume, of the amount of Ne. In a specific example the lamp is U-shaped having an internal diameter of 14 mms. and providing an arc length of 800 mms., and is provided on its inner surface with a coating of sodium-resistant glass. The lamp is enclosed within a double-walled Dewar jacket. The envelope is filled as above at a total pressure of 10 mms. of mercury together with sodium vapour and about 1 gram excess sodium.
