762,264. Making bags. WINDMOLLER, A., and HOLSCHER, F. Nov. 16, 1954, No. 33218/54. Class 94(2). [Also in Group VIII] In the manufacture of bags from tubing of thermoplastic or thermoplastic-coated material, the tubing is cut transversely into bag lengths which are fed in succession to a movable sealing device having a series of bag sealing stations, the rear end of a bag length is heat-sealed at each sealing station, and the leading end of each bag is then detached from the sealing station and the bag delivered. As shown, tubing 3 is cut into lengths by cutters 5, 6 and the cut lengths are fed by belts 8, 9 between a rotary cylinder 10 and an endless band 11, the rear end of each length being gripped against an electrically heated bar 12 by a cam-operated gripper rail 13 ; transfer of the tube lengths to cylinder 10 is assisted by suction orifices in the cylinder or by air blown from an external source. During its travel with cylinder 10, the rear end of each tube length is seamed to form a bag by heat from bar 12 and then cooled by the heating current being switched off and/or coolant being passed through bar 12. After leaving band 11, each other bag is retained on cylinder 10 by suction or an external air jet, its rear end is released by gripper 13 and its front end gripped by cam-controlled grippers 17 on a second cylinder 16, cylinder 10 being circumferentially grooved to accommodate grippers 17. Cylinder 16 delivers the bags onto an intermittently-moving conveyer 24; or, where the bags are made of stiff material, they may be deposited in upright position side-byside.
