Abstract

A plastisol comprises a finely-divided vinyl halide polymer dispersed in a mixture of a major proportion of a plasticizer for the polymer and a minor proportion of a high-boiling, liquid, aromatic hydrocarbon mixture obtained as the high-boiling residue in the alkylation of benzene with a mixture of tertiary olefins having an average of twelve carbon atoms in the molecule. Polymers mentioned are polyvinyl chloride and copolymers of vinyl chloride with one or more other monomers such as methyl maleate, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate, or benzoate, methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, or allyl acrylate, methyl, ethyl, or propyl methacrylate, styrene, o-chloro-, p-chloro-, p-ethyl-, or 2,5-dichlorostyrene, butadiene, chloroprene, acrylic acid amide, acrylic acid anilide, acrylonitrile, or the methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, amyl, hexyl, heptyl, octyl, allyl, methallyl, or phenyl esters of maleic, crotonic, itaconic, or fumaric acid. The plasticizer may be dibutyl, diamyl, dihexyl, dicyclohexyl, butyl benzoyl, di-(n-octyl), di-(2-ethyl hexyl), diheptyl, dinonyl phthalate, or mixtures, di-(2-ethylhexyl) mono- or di-chloro, or dibutyl tetrachloro phthalate, or an organic phosphate such as triphenyl, tricresyl, cresyl diphenyl, hexyl diphenyl, 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl, iso-octyl diphenyl, nonyl diphenyl, decyl diphenyl, 2-n-propylheptyl diphenyl, 2-butyloctyl diphenyl, tridecyl diphenyl, tetradecyl diphenyl, octadecyl diphenyl, hexyl dicresyl, 2-ethylbutyl dicresyl, n-octyl dicresyl, iso-octyl dicresyl, 2-ethylhexyl dicresyl, nonyl dicresyl, decyl dicresyl, 2 - n - propylheptyl dicresyl, 2 - butyloctyl dicresyl, tridecyl dicresyl, tetradecyl dicresyl, or octadecyl dicresyl. The plastisols may be used in dip moulding.
