Abstract

762,108. Powder metallurgy. AKTIE. BOLAGET TUDOR. Oct. 19, 1953 [Oct. 20, 1952; Oct. 21, 1952], No. 28785/53. Class 83 (4). Also in Group XXXVI] A battery electrode is made by sintering iron or other metal powder in an atmosphere containing hydrogen, disintegrating the sintered mass so formed and subjecting it to a second sintering operation at a higher temperature and for a shorter time. The iron powder may be obtained electrolytically and the first sintering operation is conducted at 300-600‹ C. for about three hours. The sponge iron so obtained is powdered and subjected to a second sintering at about 900‹ C. for one hour. Before being sintered the metal powder may be mixed with pore-producing materials such as sawdust, soot, iron oxalate which disappear during the sintering. Barium sulphate, titanium oxide or other colloidal material may also be added to control crystallization of the iron and improve the capacity of the electrode.
