761,636. X-ray apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Nov. 9, 1954 [Nov. 12,1953], No. 32403/54. Class 98(1) In X-ray apparatus including an electronic image intensifier, an objective lens and a magnifying lens are mounted behind the output screen, and a light-diffusing screen, which may be removable, is placed at the region wherein an image of the output screen is formed by the objective. As shown, an image IV of an object II is produced on the output screen 6 of an image intensifier 4 by means of an X-ray tube 1. An objective lens 8 and a mirror 9 produce an image of the screen at V, and this image is seen as a virtual image VI formed by a lens 11, which appears as an image VII after reflection at a mirror 13. The mirrors and lenses may be mounted in a housing 18, rotatable about the axis of lens 8. The exit pupil for direct observation is of diameter d 14. If a plate of frosted glass 10 is placed at V, the light is diffused and the exit pupil is enlarged to diameter d 17, and can therefore be more easily found. The image will be brightest where formed by rays passing directly through the plate 10, so the position of the original exit pupil may easily be found, the plate then being retracted for direct observation. The plate may be frosted only in parts, e.g. an annulus or parallel strips, with an area of clear glass between; in this case the plate need not be retracted.
