Class 59 A disc mill, pulp refiner or the like comprises at least one pair of relatively movable grinding elements, an enclosed flow passage to and from the grinding elements for the material being refined, and valve means disposed at the inlet and outlet ends of the flow passage regulating flow through the passage. The disc mill shown comprises grinding segments 15, 16 carried on opposite sides of a disc 14 keyed to a rotary shaft 13 and co-acting grinding segments 18, 21 carried by axially-adjustable stationary plates 17, 19, the shaft being surrounded by housing elements 28, 29 provided with inlets 31, 32 respectively, and the disc 14, plates 17, 19, and housing elements 28, 29 being surrounded by a housing 33 having a central rib 34 with which the disc 14 makes a sealing engagement thus dividing the housing 33 into separate chambers 35, 36 having outlet openings 37, 38 respectively, the inlet 31 and outlets 37, 38 being provided respectively with adjustable throttling valve devices 39, 41, 42. A tubular conduit 48 extends between the valve device 41 and the inlet 32. The plates 17, 19 are adjustable by means of manually-operable screwthreaded shafts 22, 23. Material to be refined is admitted to the mill by means of the valve device 39 and is directed between the grinding, segments 15, 18 in chamber 35. After leaving the latter chamber by means of the outlet 37 and valve 41, the material is directed by means of the conduit 48 to the chamber 36 and between the grinding segments 16, 19. The refined material escapes from the chamber 36 by means of the outlet 38 and valve device 42 and is conducted from the mill through a conduit 49.
