761,401. Continuous - casting machines. ROSSI, J. May 17, 1954, No. 14418/54. Class 83 (1). In a continuous-casting machine wherein the casting passes through a mould having elements displaceable in longitudinal and transverse directions, periodically-operating means are provided for controlling the elements in a continuous series of alternating-cycles, each comprising a transverse closing-in movement of the mould-elements simultaneously with the commencement of a downward displacement thereof, followed by a transverse separating- movement of the elements simultaneously with the commencement of an upward displacement thereof. Mould-elements 3, 4 preferably of copper, slidably connected to the lower part of the mould 1, are pressed towards each other by springs 16. The assembly is subjected to vertical oscillations and on upward-movement the elements are released from engagement with the cast-piece by the engagement of wedges 18, 19 on the elements, with spring- loaded abutments 20, Fig. 4, carried on a fixed upright 21, the elements being thereby forced apart. On downward movement of the assembly with the casting, the abutments pivot at 22 to allow the wedges to pass. In a modification, Fig. 5, for casting circular-section work, the elements 26-28 are of cylindrical form. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7, the elements 34, 35 are forced together by jacks 39 against the action of springs 38. The assembly is reciprocated vertically by other jacks which, with the jacks 39, are controlled so that on upward movement of the assembly the jacks 39 release the elements and allow them to move out of engagement with the casting, under the action of the springs 38. The elements may be cooled by sprays or they may incorporate cooling-water passages.
