Abstract

761,042. Thread tensioning arrangements; loom shuttles. WEBB, K. W. June 9, 1952 [June 8, 1951], No. 13620/51. Classes 120 (2) and 142 (2). A device for tensioning thread comprises a series of columns, the ends of which are anchored in a horizontal plane in linear alignment or staggered on opposite sides of a centre line, the columns being curved or inclined upwards from the horizontal plane and their other ends terminating one above the other in a vertical plane in which they are spaced apart alternately laterally of the device, so that thread drawn through the columns is constrained to a sinuous path. As shown, a tensioning device comprises a metal holder having a base portion 1 and an upright portion 2, and columns 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 made of steel wire, the lower ends of which are anchored in linear alignment in the base portion 1, (Fig. 3) and the upper ends of which are anchored one above the other alternately on opposite sides of a slot in the upright portion 2 (Fig. 4). The device may also comprise an upright member 15 to which may be pivoted an arm 16 (Fig. 6) carrying a thread guide 18. The thread guide may be held in a vertically adjustable position by co-operation of the arm 16 with a rack 20 on the side of the member 2 (Fig. 4). The device is shown in Fig. 6 mounted within a shuttle 10, the thread 21 being drawn through the device from a pirn 12 and over a guide member 22 out through the shuttle eye 11. A second device may be interposed between the guide member 22 and shuttle eye. The positions of the columns may be adjustable, and in addition to the thread guide 18 a further height adjustable guide member may be included at the opposite end of the device.
