Abstract
Salts are prepared by reacting a polyalkylene imine with a fatty acid. Polyethylene, polypropylene and polybutylene imines are mentioned and the poly-imine contains 3-150 repeating units, and is preferably such that a 50 wt. per cent dispersion in water has a viscosity of 50-5000 poises at 25 DEG C. The fatty acid contains 6-20 carbon atoms. In Example 1 a salt is prepared from a polyethylene imine having as a 50 per cent aqueous solution a viscosity of 850 poises at 25 DEG C. by refluxing an aqueous solution with coconut oil acids of average molecular weight 220. Benzene was added as an azeotroping agent for removal of water. The products are used as pour point depressants for oil. In Example 2 the salt of Example 1 is used in admixture with a condensate made by alkylating naphthalene with a chlorinated wax.ALSO:A minor proportion of a fatty acid salt of a polyalkylene imine (see Group IV(a)) is added to a lubricating oil as a pour point depressant. Preferably the polyalkylene imine is such that a 50 wt. per cent, dispersed in water has a viscosity of 50-5,000 points at 15 DEG C., and the fatty acid is one with 6-20 carbon atoms. In Example 1 a salt of polyethylene imine with mixed coconut oil acids is added in varying proportions to an extracted Mid-Continent SSAE 20 bar stock. In Example 2 a mixture of this same salt with a condensate from naphthalene and chlorinated wax, is used in the same way. The pour point depressants are preferably dissolved in mineral oil to form concentrates which facilitate the addition of small quantities of the salt to lubricating oil. Conventional lubricating oil additives may also be added.
