Abstract

The invention comprises new compounds of general formula: <FORM:0760986/IV(b)/1> in which R is an aryl radical, Z is hydrogen or an alkyl radical, and X is one of the divalent radicals -O-, -S-, -NH-, <FORM:0760986/IV(b)/2> -CO-, -CH2- or -CH=CH-. The benzene rings may be further substituted by hydrocarbon groups. They may be prepared by condensing a diphenyl compound, bridged in the 6,61 position by one of the specified divalent radicals, with an aromatic vinyl compound in the presence of a bleaching earth. Suitable diphenyl compounds are, for example, diphenylene oxide, diphenylene sulphide, carbazole, fluorene, fluorenone, phenanthrene, N-methyl carbazole and N-ethyl carbazole. Suitable aromatic vinyl compounds include styrene, a -methyl styrene and vinyl naphthalene. It is preferred to carry out the condensation in the presence of a volatile organic solvent, e.g. toluene, xylene or cumene. In the examples: (a) diphenylene oxide is dissolved in xylene and condensed with a -methyl styrene in the presence of a bleaching earth; (b) carbazole is dissolved in cumene and is condensed with a -methyl styrene in the presence of a bleaching earth; (c) phenanthrene is dissolved in xylene and reacted with a -methyl styrene in the presence of a bleaching earth; (d) fluorene is dissolved in toluene and condensed with a -methyl styrene in the presence of a bleaching earth; and (e) phenanthrene is dissolved in xylene and is condensed with styrene in the presence of a bleaching earth.
