Abstract

760,960. Tent-like structures. SMITH, C. A. V. Jan. 5, 1955 [Jan. 5, 1954], No. 289/54. Class 20(1) The collapsible framework of a domeshaped tent-like structure includes ribs consisting of two parts 11, 12 which are lockably hinged at 13, each rib having wire, cord or thin rod ties 19 which removably engage eyes on the hinges 13. The upper ends of the rib parts 11 are hingedly secured to a timber cap member 10, and the lower ends of parts 12 are hinged to horizontal spacing members 15 which are themselves. hinged at their centres 17. The framework may be collapsed to form a bundle of parallel rods, Fig. 1 (not shown). To enable the ribs to be bowed when erecting the structure, a loop hangs from the cap 10 which is pulled down as the ties 19 are positioned. Fig. 6 shows a complete structure having a covering which may be of gored canvas, or of plastic tailored from the piece or formed by cocooning. A weathering skirt 21 and an entrance canopy 22 may be supported by subsidiary ribs, and the ties 19 may be used as supports for a flexible interior lining. The spacing members 15 may be rigid rods hinged at one end to a part 12 and detachably hooked to the neighbouring part 12. Additional horizontal spacing members may be provided at spaced intervals above the members 15. The ribs may be formed in more than two parts, or they may extend from one peripheral point at the base of the dome to another diametrically opposite peripheral point and be hinged in the middle to the cap member. The ribs may be located angularly by two multi-sockets each of which may comprise a plurality of sockets lockably hinged about a common pivot. According to the Provisional Specification, the central hinged joint of each spacing member may be "broken," the ends of the member each remaining hinged to an adjacent rib member.
