Abstract

<PICT:0760580/III/1> Apparatus for distilling must and rectifying the alcohol therefrom comprises two pairs of distilling and rectifying columns A, B and C, D, the first pair of columns operating at a gauge pressure of about 0.35 kg. per sq. cm. and the second pair of columns at a vacuum of 200 mm. of mercury at the top of the rectifying column D, the heat required for distillation and rectification in the second pair of columns being obtained from the vinasses from the first distilling column A and the alcoholic vapours of high degree coming from the first rectification column B. The column A is heated with steam controlled by regulator E. The vinasses from column A after preheating the must feed in heater J are heated at F by the alcoholic vapours from column B and then fed at 2 to the base of the vacuum column C and are finally used to preheat the must feed for column C at K. A vacuum is maintained in columns C and D by pump G. The heater F may be connected up as in the apparatus described: in Specification 718,899. The vapours extracted from column D may be absorbed at H by the device described in Specification 683,781.
