Abstract
In preparing an animal feed supplement which contains fat-soluble vitamin or vitamins in a form protected against oxidation, the vitamin-active substance is emulsified in a hot, concentrated solution of a colloidal, hydrophilic organic p substance, e.g. a soluble starch derivative, a gum such as gum arabic, a soluble cellulose ether or ester, carboxymethyl- or carboxyethyl-cellulose, and the emulsion is dispersed and dried upon a powdered plant tissue substance kept in a fluidized state by an upwardly directed current of drying air. The plant tissue substance is exemplified by a cereal flour, alfalfa meal and the ground residue of oil seeds after the pressing out or extraction of the oil. According to an example, vitamin A palmitate and groundnut oil are emulsified in a solution of gelatine, saccharose and glucose in boiled, distilled water, propyl gallata is added to the emulsion to minimize vitamin oxidation during the subsequent operations, the emulsion is sprayed downwards on to wheat flour fluidized by an upward current of air, and hot air is then blown through the mixture to dry it: one part of the product, which is in the form of particles of 1 mm. diam. and contains 10 per cent of water and 20,000 i.u. of vitamin A/g., is mixed with 99 parts of a chicken feed containing buttermilk powder, whey powder, meat and bone meal, herring meal, dried yeast, linseed meal, ground barley, ground oats, oat flour, alfalfa meal, wheat bran, wheat flour, sodium chloride and calcium carbonate.
