Abstract

A coloured non-ferrous metallic composition is obtained by heating a non-ferrous metal or alloy to above its melting point but below that of at least one constituent of a pigment, which is then dispersed in the metal, and finally solidifying the mixture by cooling. The pigment may be added with the metal to a crucible and then heated, or added to the molten metal in a crucible. Examples are given of colouring aluminium by using one or more metals such as chromium, gold, cobalt, zirconium, titanium, copper, antimony, iron, lead and tin, non-metals such as graphite or silicon, or compounds such as clays, white lead and oxides of copper, tin and titanium. A vitreous binder such as a clay or silica sand may be added to the pigment, and is stated to be necessary when the pigment is metallic, and stirring may be used to disperse the finely divided pigment in the metal. The colouring of brass with graphite is also desired.
