Abstract

Film drying apparatus in which solidscontaining liquid is sprayed on to a heated surface such as a rotary drum 12, Fig. 1, and the liquid evaporated, includes a spray unit comprising a rotary disc 27 with a tubular stem 28 dipping into the liquid within a casing 16. Rotation of the disc by a motor 21 causes liquid to be drawn up the stem on to the disc from which it is thrown through a casing extension 20 on to <PICT:0760131/III/1> <PICT:0760131/III/2> the drum. A knife 9 strips off the solids left on the drum after the liquid has been evaporated. The casing, disc and motor are adjustably supported by a pillar 18. The width of the spray outlet 7 from the casing is adjustable by shutters 1, 2 which slide in guides fixed to the casing wall, and radial baffles 29 in the base of the casing prevent liquid surging therein. A pump 35 driven by a motor 36 draws liquid from a container 32 and feeds it to a vessel 39 from which it is fed to the casing, and a pipe 30 with an inlet 31 maintains a constant level within the casing. A pipe 42 provides a local liquid circulation preventing solids settling out when spraying ceases. An apparatus of greater capacity comprises a number of spray discs spaced along a heated drum, and one such apparatus includes longitudinally extending troughs 52, 53 located parallel to a drum 54, and with a slot 56 in the trough 53 adjacent the drum. The troughs are divided longitudinally by transverse partitions extending across their upper parts, and in each section thus formed a spray disc 27 is provided. Each disc is driven by a separate motor adjustably supported on a pillar 70, and each section has two spaced pivoted flaps mounted on a longitudinal wall 58 between the troughs to provide an adjustment of the amount of spray reaching the drum. The tops of the troughs are covered by flaps.
