Abstract

The oxidation of hydrocarbon oils is inhibited by contacting the oil at a temperature below 212 DEG F. with a mixture of different oil-insoluble substances which would form a buffer solution having a pH of 9.5-10.5 in dilute aqueous solution. The mixtures are (1) a metal salt of a polybasic acid and its corresponding acid salt (2) an amine and its salt or (3) a weak acid and its metal salt. The metal salt of (1) may be an alkali metal, e.g. sodium, salt of phosphoric, carbonic or boric acid, e.g. Na3 PO4 and Na2 HPO4, K3 PO4 and K2 HPO4, Na2 CO3 and NaHCO3 and K2 CO3 and KHCO3. Amines referred to are methylamine, butylamine and methyl thionyl n - butylamine; amine salts specified are hydro-chlorides and sulphonates. Weak acids referred to are boric acid and glycocoll. The mixture of substance may be deposited on a porous carrier which is suspended in the oil, or may be dispersed or suspended in the oil. In an example, a distillate oil containing free sulphonic acids is treated with a fabric impregnated with aqueous solutions of a mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium borate or of trisodium phosphate, both solutions having a pH of 10.
