Abstract
Silver of high bactericidal and catalytic activity is produced by reducing a silver compound in an aqueous solution of a strong acid with a quantity of reducing agent such that at most 50 per cent of the silver compound present is reduced to silver. The aqueous suspension of the silver may be incorporated at the milling stage into a soap composition so that the final soap contains 0.5-1 per cent of silver. The silver may also be used as a catalyst, being deposited on kieselguhr, porcelain or silica gel.ALSO:Silver, which is stated to have high bactericidal and catalytic activity, is produced by reducing a silver compound in an aqueous solution of a strong acid by means of a quantity of reducing agent such that at most 50 per cent of the silver compound present is reduced to silver. The silver compound used is preferably a water-soluble silver salt, e.g. silver phosphate, perchlorate, citrate or acetate; the acid used preferably has a common anion with the salt. The reducing agent may be an aldehyde, a hydrazine, a photographic developing agent or hypophosphorous acid, and the reduction is preferably effected at a temperature not above 50 DEG C. The silver may be incorporated in soaps, ointments, bandages and surgical dressings and may be employed as a catalyst.ALSO:Silver of high bactericidal activity, produced by reducing a silver compound in an aqueous solution of a strong acid with a quantity of reducing agent such that at most 50 per cent of the silver compound present is reduced to silver, is incorporated in creams, ointments, jellies, paste and lotions and also in bandages and surgical dressings. In an example, an ointment of woolfat alcohol incorporates 0,3-1 per cent of thin silver.
