Abstract
759,022. Tubular heat-exchangers. CRESSWELL, S. J. April 15, 1954 [April 25, 1953], No. 11502/53. Class 64(3). Hot liquid from a batch of vessels is passed into a trough disposed below the outlets from the vessels, the trough containing a heat exchanger in which cold fresh liquid is preheated on its way to a heater for subsequent supply to the vessels. In the preferred arrangement hot waste water from a group of washing machines (not shown) is utilized to preheat incoming fresh water for supply to the machines. In the form shown the bottom of the trough 10 slopes towards a chamber 18 from which the waste water is discharged. A partition 13 provides a two pass flow for the hot waste water from the various machines which enters the upper pass through connections (not shown) provided in a lid 14 closing the trough. The heat exchanger comprises U-tubes 24 connected at their ends to headers 23, 28 having connections (e.g. 22, 29) for the admittance of cold water and the discharge of warmed water. Three or more passes may be provided in the trough and the passes may be arranged side by side instead of being one above the other as shown. The trough may be surrounded by heat insulation or alternatively air may be blown thereover for use in a drying or airing cabinet. The two fluids, preferably flow through the apparatus in counterflow.
