An anaesthetic vaporizing appliance has a main chamber for liquid anaesthetic, from which it is withdrawn into the vaporizing chamber, and a secondary chamber of space, into which the liquid passes if the device is inverted or tilted. The appliance is also provided with a filler which limits the quantity of liquid which can be placed in the main chamber. Liquid is poured in to level 35, Fig. 1, and passes through orifices 37, 40, 41, to a wick 23, where it is vaporized by air passing down a tube 8, through ducts 25 and up the outside of the wick to a temperature controlled valve member 29 on a bimetal strip 30. This mixes with air'received direct from a controllable air inlet 11 and passes out through a non-return valve 21 to outlet 22. If the appliance is tilted, the liquid passes into an upper chamber 4, clear of the wick. This chamber is normally vented through a nipple 42 to prevent liquid being forced out by temperature changes. The filler comprises a screwdown cover 50, Fig. 2, over an aperture leading to a channel 48 directed away from the anaesthetic reservoir. Normally the reservoir is filled with the device level, up to the filler orifice. However, it is impossible to add more than this if the filler is tilted upwards as the channel 48 fills and prevents it.
