Abstract

758,566. Fenders. BRITISH TANKER CO., Ltd., HUTCHISON, W. M., and HOPKINS, K. W. May 5, 1955 [May 7, 1954], No. 13343/54. Class 113. A fender is provided with an hydraulie cushioning arrangement in which the resistance of the hydraulic cushion to the force imposed by a ship on the fender increases as the fender moves under that force. The fender consists of barrel-shaped members 10 rotatably mounted with their axes vertical in a framework 11 suspended from a jetty 12 by means of links 13 which allow movement of the framework in the direction of the arrow whilst ensuring that it always hangs vertically. Movement of the framework along the jetty is restricted by members 14 which rest against the jetty supports 16. The cushioning arrangement comprises cylinders 18, 19 pivoted to cross members 20 between the jetty supports 21 and having pistons 22, 23 with rods 24, 25 pivoted to the framework 11. Each cylinder has ports 26, 27 so that movement of the fender due to the impact of a ship causes the piston to move to eject liquid through at least some of the ports in the cylinder and to cover in turn some or all of the ports through which liquid is being ejected. The cylinders may be positioned above the water level 28, in which case the ports on one side of the piston are connected to those on the other to provide a closed, liquid-filled system.
