Abstract

1366383 Crash barrier ENERGY ABSORPTION SYSTEMS INC 15 Sept 1971 [23 Sept 1970] 43036/71 Heading E1G [Also in Division F2] A fixed structure is protected by a shock absorbing device having a plurality of vertical. spaced first panels 30 with second panels 32 pivoted to the vertical edges thereof with the second panels being arranged in overlapping relationship, the first panels being collapsible shock absorbers 18 therebetween and being interconnected by cables 40 such that, if a vehicle collides with the panels 30, they are movable towards each other. The shock absorbers 18 comprise closed, vinyl-coated nylon cylinders filled with water and having orifices at the top to permit the escape of water on the impact of a vehicle. The panels 30, 32 may be of plywood coated with fibreglass, the second panels 32 also having a low-friction resin coating. The cables 40 are fixed to a foreward anchorage 42 by shear pins 48. Further cables 46 are connected to the front panel 30 and also to the anchorage 42. Additional cables (50), Fig. 7 (not shown) interconnect the corners of the panels 30. The space between a pair of panels 30 may be left empty, Fig. 3 (not shown). The second panels 32 are rearwardly biassed by springs 33. Additional shock absorbers 36, 38 may be arranged as shown. The panels 30 together with further panels 24 between adjacent rows of shock absorbers are movable on ground slides 54.
