Abstract

758,535. Pipe joints. PIRELLI-GENERAL CABLE WORKS, Ltd., ARMAN, A. N., ASHFORD, B.O., and HOLDUP, W. H. Sept. 15, 1954 [Dec. 10, 1953], No. 34413/53. Class 99(1). In a fluid-tight coupling of the kind in which a bush 16, Fig. 1, of resilient impervious material is located between each of two circular, oval or flattened pipes 1, 2 and an enclosing sleeve 5, 3, 4, each bush is produced by winding a tape or cord of mouldable material around the corresponding pipe end until it almost fits the sleeve and causing the windings to coalesce into a coherent mass in non-adhesive contact with the pipe and sleeve by applying axial pressure, with heat if desired, as by tightening bolts 10 to draw in sleeve ends 4, 5. The bush material may be rubber, applied unvulcanized and heated after compression to vulcanize it and render it resilient. Alternatively the bush may be of a thermoplastic material, such as synthetic rubber or plasticized polyvinyl chloride, which is heated during compression to render it temporarily plastic instead of elastic. Spirally wound type may be used which is embossed or having part-spherical depressions on one surface which form voids 18, Fig. 4, in the compressed bush 16. With pipes corrugated axially by circumferential troughs the bush may be formed from touching turns of a single helical winding of solid or hollow cord or two superposed helical windings of solid cord. Fig. 9 shows a combined winding of cord 22 and tape 23 applied to a pipe corrugated by a helical trough.
