Abstract

Carbon in the form of fibres which interlock to form an open reticulated structure is produced from peat or peat moss as free as possible from inorganic matter by disintegrating to produce a shredded, cut or torn product which will pass a seive of e.g. 60 mesh per linear which after reducing the water content to a suitable value for the disintegration e.g. 15-40 per cent, and carbonizing the disintegrated product in a retort at a temperature of 450-950 DEG C., preferably 800 DEG C. for a minimum period of 5 minutes. Peat of the sphagnum type may be employed. The carbonization also may be effected in a tunnel kiln and the peat passed through in covered boxes. The combustible products driven off from the peat may be utilized to provide heat for the carbonization. The product may be activated with steam.
